Beau ready for a foster home

Beau is doing wonderfully! He's walking much better and his nose is healing well. He is ready to go to a foster home and would really enjoy being with other dogs and people to give him hugs and love. We can't say it enough, he is just the sweetest boy. He'll likely be available for adoption to the right home by the end of the week. Here's a photo of Beau with a little gal he met yesterday...he was so good with her!

Beau is doing great and is so happy now

His nose is healing slowly and he is losing weight, which he desperately needed. Everyone who has met him and walked him has fallen in love. He is just the sweetest boy and that little tail with no hair just wags a mile a minute when he sees you. Next week he will be going to a foster home and will be available for adoption. Beau is a very special boy and will need a home with very limited stairs - or no stairs, someone who will manage his weight and love him, love him, love him. He enjoys just hanging out with you, going on his walks - not hikes - but walks, no running and no biking for this boy. Stay posted for when he is officially ready for adoption.

Beau already looking better!

Today Beau looked much better. After they had shaved him down, as you can see, including his tail, he got a nice bath. What a difference a shave and bath make. Today when I went over the kennel people said he walked outside on his own with just the sling used as support. As you can see from these photos, he is having a lot of trouble with his rear legs. It doesn't help to be so overweight and out of condition. We will have to check on that later once we get him comfortable.

I did take him out for a nice walk and he was able to go further than previously. We will try to increase the distance and frequency as the days go on. This boy is just the sweetest boy and nothing seems to bother him.

Update on Beau

Beau spent the day getting totally shaved down, toenails - which were so long his feet turned in - trimmed, ears treated and his nose taken care of. Initially it was thought that the nose area "may" be cancerous but upon further examination, it was determined that it was not - HURRAH - and will heal with treatment and antibiotics. We are still having to use a sling - yes all 109 pounds of him in a sling - to get him outside to relieve himself. He has no muscle tone in his rear legs and will take rehab to build up the muscles. Let's hope tomorrow is a better day in that department.

Neglected Golden surrendered to rescue

Beau was surrendered by his owner to the rescue one day before the shelter was going to confiscate him for neglect and abuse. It brought everyone to tears when they saw him struggling to come into the vet's. He is 10 years old and was originally adopted from the Orange County shelter in 1999 as a 2 month old pup. The neighbors had called the shelter when he and two other dogs were abandoned in the yard. The owner called our hotline last night about surrendering Beau to rescue. She had a choice, either us or animal control taking him tomorrow. The shelter will pursue getting the other two dogs left in the yard.

Both of Beau's ears are infected - you could smell them when he came in. He was covered with mats, feces and foxtails. There was wire wound up in his tail feathers. His toenails were so long, they curled around and back into his pads. They will require several trimmings to get to a proper length. Finally, Beau has a very large ulceration on his nose, which may be due to fly-strike, but the vet is checking for cancer. Thankfully, he is just the sweetest, calmest boy and lay there with his tail thumping as the vet staff worked on him.
