Rosen doing very well!

Rosen had her 1 month post TPLO operation checkup. She is ambulatory with no lameness. Her stifle is stable on palpation. Her implants look stable with no signs of infection.

 

Rosen update

Rosen had her sutures removed and the surgery site looks OK. She has been a trooper during her recovery, especially living in cone purgatory in her x-pen area and having to watch her canine bother Harry able to move about freely. It still takes 2 people to take her outside with a sling, but bathroom activity should start improving.

 

Meet Rosen

This sweet 3-4 year old was an owner surrender. She wanted to play with dogs, cats and people, but we noticed that she would not place weight on her left rear leg. Two orthopedic assessments confirmed she has Degenerate Cruciate Disease and Bilateral Hip Dysplasia. We decided to provide her with a TPLO to address the left knee and minimize the stress on her other rear leg and hips. The surgeon found a complete rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament and a tear in her medial meniscus. She was a great patient and is now resting with her foster family.

Bayley cleared to run around!

On Thursday, 7/29, Bayley had his follow-up appointment with the Doctor who repaired his fractured leg.  He was sedated and X-rays were taken.  Everything looked perfect and he is doing amazingly well!  All restrictions have been lifted (except playing off-leash with other dogs) and Bayley is now able to run around his yard, go for long walks and jump up and down off the couch.  His foster family will now start focusing on reintroducing him to the outside world and other pups with leash training and interactions with other pups for socialization.  He does not require any further follow up care with his neurologist or orthopedic specialists. Very good news -- congratulations Bayley!

Bayley moves to foster home

Bayley is recovering beautifully from his surgery and is now in a foster home.  He had a follow up appointment with his orthopedic surgeon and his recovery couldn’t be going better.  Both of his legs have shown tremendous improvement and are getting stronger each day.  He walks with the assistance of a sling and is able to stand on his own for short periods of time.  This young boy has boundless amounts of energy and drive to get better and doesn’t realize he still needs to rest. 😊  He is enjoying many short walks a day with his sling and LOVES long walks in his doggie stroller to get him out and about.  We are so pleased with how well he is doing!

 

Bayley sends a pupdate

Hi my name is Bayley! I’m a very sweet boy with a great disposition. I’ve been through a lot and no matter what I’m always happy to make friends. When GRC first found me I couldn’t use my back legs but they are taking care of me now and they got me surgery to fix them. I can stand now for short periods of time and I’m getting better every day. My favorite things are people, cuddles and food. I might like to play catch but I just can’t do that yet. I hope I can find my forever home soon.

 

 

Woody's hip surgery scheduled

Woody’s surgery is tomorrow and we are so excited for him!  He will have a bit of a recovery but he is young enough to rebound quickly and we expect him to be up and about in no time.  Stay tuned for pictures and updates on our lovable boy.

Meet Woody!

Meet our beautiful and loving boy Woody! Woody is a young boy, not quite 3 years old, who joined rescue after being a frequent flyer at a local animal shelter. Before coming to us, we knew he had some very serious hip issues. Both of his hips have osteoarthritis and dysplasia. Turns out his left hip is also dislocated. We are committed to giving him the care he needs and he has seen a specialist and is now scheduled to have an FHO (Femoral Head Osteotomy) on his left leg on February 19th. We hope this will be the only surgery he will require though there is a chance he may need the right hip done later in life. Woody has been in a wonderful foster home and has proven himself to be a wonderful boy who loves everyone he meets. We look forward to him being adopted by his loving foster family once he recovers from his surgery.

 

 

Finn continues to battle skin and eye issues

The good news is that Finn’s hair has grown back. The bad news seems to continue. Finn couldn’t shake some skin issues, which the dermatologist determined was precipitated by Adrenal dysfunction disease. Searching for the adrenal issue cause, we discovered a mass in his abdomen, which needs to be biopsied. Finn’s eyes were tearing excessively, and he was constantly rubbing them. He has inward facing eyelids (entropion) and a superficial ulcer. These problems must be surgically repaired or he will be an unhappy pup, which is not his nature at all.

Update on Finn

Finn continues to improve but also has setbacks. His skin has improved but continues to have little sores rise through the skin. He has been on a cocktail of 3 antibiotics. Recently he developed a nasty cyst on his knee (see picture), leading the vet to recommend surgically removing it to prevent ongoing infections and switching one of the antibiotics.

His physical therapy sessions of acupuncture, laser treatment, and massage, and his foster home exercises, have improved his mobility. Treadmill water therapy has been put on hold while the skin issues get resolved.

Meet Finn

Finn is an 8 year old male pulled from an area shelter. The shelter had no space available, called “Code Orange,” and needed him pulled immediately. He was covered in maggots and had difficulty walking, so he was carried to his rescue ride with towels. The vet flushed his uninvited guests and shaved him, revealing wounds over his neck, shoulders, chest and belly. Finn had sepsis (infections), anemia, dry eyes, severe dental tartar and x-rays revealed hip dysplasia. We are working on clearing up the infections and rebuilding his health and will look into physical rehab to build up muscle mass in his hind legs.

Meet CiCi

CiCi is a 10 year old female surrendered to the rescue because the owner passed away. The owner had had CiCi since she was a puppy so her transition has been hard for her. Not in the best shape with being very overweight, a few lipomas, some dental tartar and a lipid on one of her eyes. Her fur had also been clipped close to her skin with some patches of fur loss. Her owner had her current on her vaccinations so we started with doing a senior blood panel on her. With that, we discovered that she has hypothyroidism. This is one of the contributing factors with her significant weight issue and hair loss. She is currently taking medication and will be re-tested in 3-4 weeks to see if her levels are therapeutic.

Tabatha is adopted!

Although still dealing with some medical issues, I am happy to announce that Tabatha, now known as Tabby, has been adopted by her foster family! Congratulations to the Barksdale family. We are so thankful that Tabby has found such a fantastic home.

Meet Tabitha

This sweet girl is from an area shelter. The neglect is evident in the condition of her skin and coat. Her teeth are worn down from chewing on herself, both her ears are infected and one of her eyes has an infection. Even with all this going on, she still greets everyone with a wiggly back end and wagging tail.

Meet Sargent Major

Sarge was caught by Animal Control and brought into the shelter as a stray. He has some lumps and bumps, hair loss (probably from fleas), and could use to gain a little weight as we can easily see his ribs. Sarge is in a foster home and getting some TLC including good food and antibiotics for his skin. We are waiting to neuter him until his skin clears up. He is really a great dog with an amazing temperament. Very much the Golden Retriever temperament we all love.

 

Laura Ann recently had a re-check after completing her first round of antibiotics. She has gotten stronger and more steady on her feet. The doctor has prescribed another round of antibiotics and then a re-check with chest x-ray in two weeks. Her eyes seem to still be irritated so we will try a different medication. She has gained weight and strength and is well enough to start some basic training. She is proving to be sweet, loyal and very smart, as you can see for yourself.

Adam's fight is over, the pain is gone

Friday night: Our heart is breaking as our little warrior is still fighting and has suffered a couple of seizures. More tests. 

Saturday: Little Atom’s levels are dropping and not stablizing. He could have possible distemper. The decision was made to give this boy peace and be free of pain. Good night sweet pup. Rest In Peace.

This is so very hard on all of us but especially to those that held this pup close to them. Thank you to the staff and doctors at VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center and the volunteers who prayed for Atom along the way. Gives lots of hugs to your pups today.

His positive steps are small and timely, licking up a little food, drinking on his own...but everyone is determined and dedicated to get this puppy out of the hospital and have him learning what a puppy should be experiencing at this age. Although our volunteer could not hold him since he was sleeping soundly, she was able to pet him as he opened his eyes slowly to take a peek and then back to sleep.

Atom has been removed from IV medications and can now take them orally. Atom is still just eating a bit, doing his P and P , and sleeping most of the time.

Saturday, July28:  Emergency surgery was performed and now Atom is facing a difficult recovery. Your donation will help cover the costs of his emergency as well as provide life supporting after care in the hospital.

Sunday, July 29: Now for the hard part!  Surgery went well and now he is being monitored and provided with plasma, fluids and nutrients while testing his levels throughout the day.

Meet Atom

So much pain, so very young
This young baby, Atom, was close to having all his organs shutting down after days of vomiting, then not eating or moving. We knew we had a very sick puppy but not a conclusive diagnosis. Expensive tests needed to be performed to determine that Atom had intussusception. This is when the intestine telescopes within itself.
